After a few days of trying things out, I've replaced the draft sheet rating system with an ELO-based one (specifically the Glicko variant). I had a long post typed out but I lost it, so here are the bullet points:
  • Wins, losses, and games played are the only stats that matter.
  • Win games and your rating will gain points; lose games and it will lose points.
  • The amount of points depends on the ratings of your teammates and opponents, and amount of games played (players with lower GP will have larger point swings so their ratings can adjust quicker).
  • Ratings update every hour on the hour.
  • All players lose 2 ratings points per day; this adjustment is done once per day.
  • The rating floor is 500. There is no rating ceiling.
  • The current ratings were derived by starting with the ratings from two weeks ago and running all CTA games from the past two weeks through the rating system.
  • Each "Left Game" deducts 50 points from the player's rating

Yeah sounds great. I love that it rewards wins and activity and penalizes people who leave early. One question that comes to mind though: Where do new/returning players get placed on the scale before they get a few games under their belts?

I really like the idea of the ELO system. Would it be possible to separate the divisions (say 1900+ is "challenger", 1800s are master, 1000s are bronze....basically the league of legends system) and somehow represent your rank in the lobby with an icon? So if you're a gold player then you would have a gold division icon in the lobby? I think that would be really cool.

I can only imagine how hard it would be to automate that type of thing though so maybe someone would have to go through the rankings twice a week and adjust the icons manually. I would volunteer to do something like that if people thought it was a good idea.

Great job on this system odo.

Unrated players are given a 500 rating. Their ratings will usually adjust quickly. For example, Zeus was ~1200 after just two games.

The rating system has been updated to take game score into account (eg. a 3-0 win will give you more points than a 3-2 win). Games from the past 30 days were recalculated using the updated system.

If that is the case Odo, we should never end a game early, ever again.
